Fish Fry - Kerala Fish Fry -Meen Varuthathu -Meen Porichathu


Ingredients :

  1. Fish - 1/2 Kg Cut into thin slices

For Marinating :

  1. Kashmiri Chilly Powder - 2 tsp
  2. Red Chilli Powder - 1tsp
  3. Ginger and Garlic Paste - 1 tsp (Optional)
  4. Turmeric Powder -1/4 tsp
  5. Pepper Powder - 1 tsp
  6. Salt to taste

For Frying :

  1. Coconut oil or any other Vegetable oil 

For Garnishing :

  1. Onion slices - 3 pieces (Cut it in round shape)
  2. Curry leaves -one full stick

Directions :

  • Clean the fish properly with water and salt.
  • Use lemon on Vinegar to avoid fishy smell - (Optional)
  • Mix all the ingredients with a little water to make a smooth paste
  • Marinate on both sides of the Fish as a thin layer
  • Keep it aside for at least half an hour (Keep it in the refrigerator -optional )
  • Heat the oil in heavy bottom pan  (Medium flame)
  • Place the fish slices one by one in the pan
  • Turn the other side of the fish after 4-5 minutes
  • Cook for another 3-4 minutes
  • Remove the fish from the fire and place it in the serving plate
  • Garnish with Onion slices and Fried curry leaves

Tips :

  • Frying time depends on the thickness of your fish slices and how crispy you need (Deep fry or shallow fry)
  • Put curry leaves while you frying the fish,it will avoid sticking the fish in the pan

Kerala Parippu Curry - Dal Curry



Ingredients

  1. Moong Dal/Cherupayar Parippu -100 gms (1 cup)
  2. Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  3. Salt -to taste

For Grinding :

  1. Grated Coconut - 1/2 Cup (1/2 of a coconut)
  2. Green Chilly - 2
  3. Cumin Seeds / Jeerakam / Jeera - 1/2 tsp
  4. Small Onion -3

For Seasoning :

  1. Small Onion - 2 (Nicely sliced) 
  2. Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp
  3. Mustard Seeds / Kaduku - 1 tsp
  4. Curry Leaves - 10 Leaves
  5. Green Chilly -2 (Split into two)
  6. Red Chilly -2 (torn into two)

Directions :

  • Roast the dal in a pan until it turns light golden brown
  • Add 2 cups of water and turmeric powder and cook well (Use Pressure Cooker -keep for 3 whistles )
  • Once done ,mash the dal to make a smooth paste
  • Grind the coconut with rest of the ingredients to make a smooth paste
  • Keeping the flame on medium , add the ground coconut mixture  and salt to the dal
  • Add sufficient water
  • Cook for 5-8 minutes
  • Heat the oil and and mustard seeds.Once the mustard seeds popped add all other ingredients ,keep until onion become brown.
  • Mix this with dal.
  • Serve with Rice.
